Professor Mahesh Choolani
Associate Professor Mahesh Choolani is one of Singapore’s leading Obstetricians & Gynaecologists with a special interest in high-risk pregnancy care and fetal medicine.
He is Senior Consultant Obstetrician and Gynaecologist at A Company for Women at Camden Medical Centre. Professor Choolani is also Senior Consultant and Associate Professor at Singapore’s National University Hospital’s Obstetrics & Gynaecology Department. There, he is in charge of the High-Risk Pregnancy Unit of the Maternal-Fetal Medicine division.
Professor Choolani obtained his Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) at the National University of Singapore. He qualified in Obstetrics & Gynaecology care in Singapore (MMed OG, FAMS), Australia and New Zealand (FRANZCOG) and the UK (FRCOG). So as to deliver the highest level of obstetric care to his patients, Professor Choolani completed his PhD in Fetal Medicine research at London’s Imperial College. His PhD focused on ways of making prenatal diagnosis safer.
Professor Choolani has worked in many countries, but most treasures his one year stay in South Africa. There he spent a year as Consultant Obstetrician & Gynaecologist at the University of the Orange Free State in Bloemfontein. This tour of responsibility gave Professor Choolani a wider international experience of obstetric problems and also a deeper understanding of many rarer diseases not seen in Singapore and many developed countries.
Not surprisingly, Professor Choolani is at the forefront of pioneering Maternal and Fetal Medicine research. He is credited with several notable breakthroughs such as FlashFISH ™, a test that can detect whether a fetus has Down Syndrome within two hours of amniocentesis or chorionic villus sampling (CVS). This development has put Singapore on the world map as being the first country to offer Same-Day Prenatal Diagnosis.
