Dr Shirin Jacob
MBBS, MMED(O&G), FRCOG, FAMS

Dr. Jacob was inspired to enter the medical profession by her mother and grandfather who were both doctors. Her decision to specialise in Obstetrics and Gynaecology was the result of the encouragement of her mentors whilst studying medicine in Singapore. She had a natural interest in what she saw as the optimism and happiness of birth.

Shirin graduated with a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS 1983) from the National University of Singapore. She holds postgraduate degrees in Obstetrics & Gynaecology both from the Postgraduate School of Medicine in Singapore (MMed O&G 1989) and the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists in London (MRCOG 1989). She is a Fellow of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists and of the Academy of Medicine in Singapore. She was an Associate Lecturer in the Postgraduate Midwifery Course at Nanyang Polytechnic, Singapore, and part-time Clinical Tutor of the Faculty of Medicine, National University of Singapore.

Shirin trained in KK Hospital and Alexandra Hospital and worked as a Consultant in KK Women’s and Children’s Hospital (KKWCH) in both the Departments of Maternal Fetal Medicine and General O&G. Shirin initiated the practice of natural birth at KKWCH, the biggest national maternity and paediatric hospital in Singapore.

Shirin enriched her experience when she worked as the designated doctor for the women of the Gurkha contingent in Singapore in the late 1990s. She travelled extensively in Nepal to remote communities to understand the welfare problems faced by these women.

In 2000 Dr Jacob entered private practice and became the Medical Director of In The Company of Women. Her clinic was the first in Singapore to pioneer the combined skills of obstetrics and gynaecology, naturopathy, chiropractic, psychology and therapeutic yoga.

Shirin also works with practitioners in acupuncture, reiki and hypnotherapy.

Her refreshing and unique approach to practicing medicine is the reason that Shirin is frequently invited to give lectures, talks on TV and radio and has been featured in many local publications.

In her own words
“I believe the practice of medicine is primarily about a privileged partnership between myself and my patients. They share with me the most intimate information at crucial times in their lives so that we can work together to achieve the level of health and wellbeing they desire.

We ‘re guided by a number of universal truths…
Each one of us is special. We cherish health. We strive for happiness. By seeking love and peace. And we decide who we want to be.

We may come from different cultures and varied backgrounds, still we share similar stories. Stories of new life. Of being a daughter or a son. Of being a parent, a partner or a friend. At some point in our lives we all face the challenges of maintaining our health and celebrate the milestones on our journey.

As a physician, my focus is the prevention of disease. It’s important to realise that we all have the power to keep ourselves and our families healthy. We fulfil our lives by raising grounded children with support from our partners and the warmth of family around us. We embrace the strength of friends that empower us, the foods that nourish us and the values by which we live.

As an obstetrician and gynaecologist I work with women through the most transformational times of their lives: adolescence, child birth, perimenopause and menopause. I help them clarify how they want to improve their health and formulate an action plan to achieve those improvements.

What’s so exciting is that we can simplify and balance our daily lives. Those tools are within our reach. By eating the right foods, being mindful of vitamin and mineral deficiencies, balancing our hormones and by exercising moderately we quickly change our health.”

Dr Jacob is currently Medical Director of A Company for Women, a leading O&G practice at Camden Medical Centre.
