Doctor Lai Fon-Min

Dr. Lai Fon-Min graduated in 1987 from the National University of Singapore and obtained his post-graduate degrees MRCOG (UK), MRANZCOG (Australia and New Zealand)  and  MMed (Obstetrics & Gynaecology, Singapore) in 1993. He was awarded a HMDP (Health and Manpower Development Programme) fellowship by the Ministry of Health in 1996 and had his sub-specialty training in Fetal Medicine at Birmingham Women’s Hospital, UK. He was made a Fellow of the Academy of Medicine, Singapore, RANZCOG and RCOG in 1997, 2003 and 2005 respectively.

He was Consultant and Head of the Antenatal Risk Assessment Unit, Department of Maternal Fetal Medicine, KK Women’s and Children’s Hospital from April  1999 until the time he went into private practice in June 2002, and has been the Visiting Head since. He was also Consultant Gynaecologist and trainer (for junior gynaecologists) in the Minimally Invasive Surgery Unit at KK Women's and Children's Hospital.

He is presently the Chairperson of the Education Committee of College of Obstetricians & Gynaecologists, Singapore and President of the College for 2009 – 2011. Besides the Visiting Head of the Antenatal Risk Assessment Unit, Department of Maternal Fetal Medicine at KK Women Hospital, he is on the Specialist Training Committee (Obstetrics & Gynaecology), Joint Committee on Specialty Training (JCST) run jointly by the Academy of Medicine and National University of Singapore and is an examiner for the joint M Med/ MRCOG part 2 examinations held in Singapore. His sub-specialty interest is in fetal medicine and in particular Down Syndrome screening and he has published numerous articles related to Down Syndrome Screening in Singapore. He is accredited with the Fetal Medicine Foundation to do Nuchal Translucency Screening scan for First Trimester Screening for Down Syndrome and is accredited to perform pre-natal invasive procedures (Chorionic Villous sampling, Amniocentesis and Fetal blood sampling) with the antenatal diagnostic center at KKH. Together with Professor George Yeo, he produced the local fetal biometry charts which have been in use in KK Hospital since 1993.

His current practice includes general obstetrics and gynaecology with special interests in the field of fetal medicine (particularly ultrasound scans and prenatal diagnosis procedure) and laparoscopic surgery (minimally invasive surgery).

Dr Lai is married with 2 teenage boys and is a firm believer in empowering women in making informed choices with regards to their type of birth experience they wish and in the choices in the management of gynaecological conditions. He is a member of the Australian College of Nutritional and Environmental Medicine (ACNEM) and is a certified Clinical Hypnotist with the London College of Clinical Hypnosis (LCCH).
